Whether Karen is photographing families at the beach or children from the Dominican Republic for a non-profit, her work reflects the emotion of her subject and their experience. Both her family work and commercial projects have enabled her to travel the world. From the villages of Ethiopia, to the mountains of Machu Picchu, to the 3rd grade classroom down the street, Karen enjoys a diversity of people and places.
The past few years have brought exciting opportunities to Karen's work. In January 2002/2003, Karen's exhibit, "The Universal Language of Children", at the Children's Museum of Houston opened as did "Fun and Games Around the World". In September of 2001 she had a photography show, "Visions of Spirit." in Washington, D.C. at the Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Church, in September 2004 it was a Fotofest Exhibit in Houston.
Karen's work has been published in numerous magazines and is part of many private and corporate art collections.
Karen recently founded a non profit organization, Heart of Humanity. Its mission is to educate and inspire children through photography and creative writing. Photography exhibits, classroom teaching, and collaboration with other nonprofits to creatively tell their stories encompass the outreach of this program. As a photographer with a background in marketing, graphic design, and creative writing, Karen's goal is to develop national and international projects that will creatively educate.
One of her first projects involved a partnership with Writers in the Schools, WITS and the Chicano Family Center. Karen brought cameras to the children in the programs and asked them to photograph and then write about their photographs with guidance from their WITS teacher. The children's photographs and writings were integrated into her Children's Museum exhibit. She also works closely with the Latin American Youth Center (LAYC) in Washington, DC. Karen also supports Kris and Amy Brown in their efforts with the Kris Brown Kick Club benefiting Texas Children’s Hospital Charity Care Program (www.krisbrownskickclub.com and www.texaschildrenshospital.org).
To further support her dedication to assisting those in her community, Karen's company offers a "Charity of Choice" program. When scheduling their photography session, clients participate by choosing to donate a predetermined amount from their photography fee to Child Advocates, Inc., an organization fighting child abuse.
At the studio, Alice, Marcie, John, Jerry and Linsey are the people who make sure it all happens. It is their continued support, enthusiasm, talent and generosity of heart which enables the work to thrive and find a home where it is meant to be.
To have fun, to laugh, to reflect, to inspire. These are the hopes for one and all.
